Woodpigeon Decoying Clothing: Staying Hidden, Dry and Comfortable in the Hide

Woodpigeon decoying clothing for staying hidden, dry and comfortable in the hide on UK pigeon shooting days.

Woodpigeon decoying clothing staying hidden sounds simple, but a lot of shooters still mess it up. They put on any old camo, sit in the hide, then wonder why birds keep flaring away from the decoys.

Pigeons see more than people think. They catch movement. They notice pale hands. They pick up a face turning in the sun. They see a blue shirt cuff, a shiny zip, a flat grey jacket, or one stupid bright logo on a sleeve. Then they are gone. No drama. Just gone.

Pigeon shooting is not clay pigeon shooting. On a clay shooting stand, you wait, call, mount the gun and shoot the clay pigeon. The target is not judging your jacket. In pigeon decoying, the bird is looking at the whole picture before it comes close. Hide, decoys, flight lines, wind, movement, clothing. All of it.

Most people spend plenty of time thinking about cartridges, decoys and the gun. Fair enough. But shooting clothing is part of the job. If your clothing is wrong, the best shot in the field can still have a poor day.

Wear Camo That Matches the Ground

Wear camo for the field you are actually in. Not the camo that looked good in the shop. Not the one that was in stock at a good regular price. The one that suits the ground, the crop, the trees, the light and the hide.

Dark woodland camo can look daft on pale stubble. Light reed camo can stand out against a dark hedge. In winter, dark green, brown, olive and broken grey usually work better around wet ground, rape, bare trees and shadow. In the summer months, lighter brown, straw and dry-looking patterns tend to sit better over cut crops.

Do not overthink it, but do look properly. If the surroundings are dull and dark, do not sit there in pale clothing. If the field is light and dry, do not wear a heavy green jacket that looks like a lump of hedge in the wrong place.

Orange, blue, yellow, pink, purple and white do not belong in a pigeon hide unless they are fully covered. Bright colours scare birds. Shiny colours scare birds. Pale blocks of colour scare birds. It is not complicated.

A cap helps hide the head. Camo gloves help hide the hands. A face veil helps stop your face flashing when you look up. These small things matter more than a fancy coat.

The Hide Comes Before the Jacket

Good clothing cannot save a bad hide. If the hide is in the wrong place, badly shaped or sitting off the flight lines, you are already in trouble.

Watch the field before you set up. Look where the birds fly. Look where they want to drop. Look where they are feeding. If you are 100 or 200 yards off the line, the decoys may look lovely to you and still do nothing.

Use natural cover. Netting and poles are useful, but branches, grass, reeds and crop trash from the same area make the hide look more believable. Then make your clothing match that cover. A dark leafy jacket in a dry straw hide looks wrong. Pale camo in a black hedge looks wrong.

Pigeons do not need to know what you are. They only need to see something that does not fit. That is enough to make them fly past.

A leafy 3D layer can work well when cover is thin. It breaks up the head, shoulders and arms. Those are the bits that give you away when you move.

Decoys, Wind and Clothing Need to Agree

Decoys are not magic ornaments. Shell decoys, inflatable decoys, flappers and whirlies all have their place, but they need to work with the wind and the hide.

Pigeons usually want to land into the wind. Set the decoys so they have a clear landing space. A mixed pattern around 10 to 25 yards from the hide often gives a useful shooting range and a natural look.

This is where clothing matters most. A bird on final approach is looking hard. A shiny press stud, a pale hand, a blue cuff, a sudden head turn or a noisy sleeve can spoil it.

You do not need to make a big movement to get spotted. A small movement at the wrong time is enough. That is why dull camo clothing, quiet jackets and covered skin are not optional details. They are part of pigeon shooting.

Waterproof Jackets Must Be Quiet

Waterproof jackets are useful in the UK. Obviously. But some waterproof jackets are hopeless for pigeon shooting. Too stiff. Too glossy. Too noisy. Every time you lift the gun, they sound like a plastic bag being screwed up.

That is no use in a hide.

Look for waterproof jackets with a soft outer face, dull finish and quiet fabric. Breathable jackets are better when you have to carry kit in, build the hide, then sit still for hours. You want protection from rain and wind, but you do not want to cook yourself on the walk in.

Avoid shiny zips, hard plastic accessories, bright pull cords and glossy poppers. Birds can catch a flash from above before you even notice it.

Hillman should be judged like any proper outdoor hunting gear: quiet when you move, useful in wind and rain, and practical enough for long hours in the hide.

There is an extensive range of shooting jackets, coats, waistcoats and hunting clothing out there. Jack Pyke, Alan Paine and plenty of other brands make kit for the shooting world. Fine. But do not buy a jacket just because it looks smart, has a big name, or sits nicely on a shop page. Buy it because it is quiet, dull, practical and right for the field.

Fleece Jackets Are Useful, But Not Enough Alone

Fleece jackets are good in the hide. They are quiet, warm and comfortable. As a mid-layer, fleece makes sense for pigeon shooting, especially when you are sitting still in the wind.

But fleece is not magic either. It can hold moisture. If rain gets into it, you will feel cold fast. A fleece under a quiet waterproof outer layer is usually a better setup than fleece on its own.

In mild weather, a shirt, thin fleece and breathable waterproof jacket may be enough. In winter, add a warmer mid layer. In hard wind, make sure the outer layer blocks it properly. Cold wind in a hide gets old very quickly.

The trick is not to wear everything you own. If you sweat heavily walking in, you will freeze later. Dress so you can carry the kit, set up, then sit without getting damp and miserable.

Shirts, Waistcoats and Coats

Shirts are still useful for pigeon decoying. A dull green, brown or checked shirt can work well under a fleece or jacket. Just avoid bright blue, white or anything that flashes when the coat opens.

Waistcoats can be handy in warmer weather. They give pockets for cartridges and small accessories without making the arms bulky. But they need to be quiet and dull. A rattly waistcoat with shiny clips is not clever.

Coats are better for colder days, but bulky coats can ruin gun mount. If the stock catches on the shoulder, or the sleeve pulls tight, you will not shoot cleanly. Try your shooting clothing with the gun before going into the field. Do not find out it is wrong when birds are already coming in.

Trousers Need to Be Tough and Silent

Trousers for pigeon shooting have a boring job, but it is an important one. They need to be quiet, tough and comfortable when sitting.

You may be kneeling, bending, climbing through rough edges, sitting on a box, walking across ruts or pushing through wet crop. Weak trousers get ripped. Noisy trousers get noticed. Tight trousers make you move more than you should.

Tweed has its place in game shooting. Plenty of shooters prefer it for certain days. But in a pigeon hide, with mud, wet grass, thistles and a long walk in, muted camo trousers or green and brown field trousers are often easier to live with.

Waterproof overtrousers can help in rain, but some are far too noisy. If they rustle every time you shift your feet, they are a problem unless the weather is bad enough that you have no choice.

Boots, Socks and Footwear

Bad footwear ruins the day. That is all.

You might be crossing wet ground, ruts, sticky mud, tramlines, gateways, ditches and rough field edges while carrying decoys, poles, nets and a gun. Waterproof boots with proper grip are usually the sensible choice for UK pigeon shooting.

In the summer months, lighter boots can be more comfortable. But they still need support and protection. Trainers might feel fine at the car. They feel less clever when your feet are soaked before the hide is even built.

A good pair of socks matters too. Cold, wet feet make you fidget. Fidgeting creates movement. Movement scares pigeons. Simple chain.

Footwear is not glamorous, but it keeps you still. Staying still kills more pigeons than looking smart.

Concealment Details Birds Notice

Pigeons notice details. Bare hands. Pale face. Glasses flashing. Head turning too fast. Sleeve catching the sun. Gun barrels moving above the net too early. A block of grey in the wrong place. A bright orange lining showing when a jacket opens.

Wear camo gloves, but not thick useless things that make the trigger hand clumsy. You still need safe gun handling and a smooth mount.

Cover the face if the light is strong. A veil, mask or cap brim helps. If you wear glasses, be careful with reflections. Move slowly. Look with your eyes before you turn your head.

Do not wash camo clothing in normal bright detergent if you can avoid it. Some detergents leave optical brighteners in the fabric. That can make clothing stand out more than you expect. Use outdoor clothing wash or avoid brightener-heavy products.

Ear Defenders and Useful Accessories

Ear defenders belong in the kit. Pigeon shooting may feel more casual than clay shooting, but the noise still damages hearing. A busy day over decoys can mean plenty of shots.

Accessories should help, not flap around and shine. Cartridge bags, calls, gloves, caps, face covers, a seat cushion and small tools are useful. Shiny clips, loose metal buckles and bright straps are not.

Keep the kit practical. Carry what you need, not the whole shop. Too much kit makes the walk in harder. Too little kit leaves you cold, wet or badly hidden. There is a balance.

A full range of clothing is nice at home. You do not need the full range in the field every day.

Shape Matters More Than People Think

A human shape is easy to spot. Round head. Square shoulders. Straight arms. Clean outline. That shape does not belong in a hedge.

Keep low. Use back cover. Do not sit outlined against the sky. Break up your shoulders with netting, branches and camo. Let the hide and clothing work together.

If you are near trees or a roost line, darker brown and green may work. If you are on pale stubble, lighter camo may be better. If the sun is strong, cover skin and shade the face. If the wind is cold, protect yourself without adding noisy fabric.

Concealed does not mean buried. It means nothing looks wrong.

Do Not Dress for the Shop Photo

There is no single perfect outfit for pigeon shooting. Anyone saying otherwise is selling something.

The right clothing depends on crop, weather, hide position, ground, wind, walking distance and how long you plan on sitting. In winter, you may need proper protection, warm layers and waterproof boots. In summer months, breathable jackets, lighter shirts and decent shade may matter more.

Do not dress for the catalogue. Dress for the day. Dress for the field. Dress so you can sit still.

Happy shooting usually comes from simple things done properly. Good hide. Right flight line. Sensible decoys. Quiet clothing. Covered hands and face. Dry feet. No bright colours. No noisy jacket. No stupid movement when birds are coming in.

That is not fancy advice, but it works.

FAQs

Do I need to wear camo for pigeon shooting?

Yes, wear camo if you want to stay properly concealed. Pigeons see movement and odd colours quickly. Camo clothing helps break up your shape in the hide.

Is pigeon shooting clothing different from clay shooting clothing?

Yes. Clay pigeon shooting clothing is mainly about comfort and gun mount. Pigeon shooting clothing also needs concealment, quiet fabric and weather protection for sitting in a hide.

Can I wear tweed for pigeon shooting?

You can wear tweed, and some shooters prefer it, especially if they come from game shooting. But modern camo clothing is often more practical for wet, muddy pigeon decoying.

Do I need ear defenders for pigeon shooting?

Yes. Ear defenders should be part of the kit. Pigeon shooting still exposes your hearing to repeated gunfire, just like clay shooting or other shooting sports.

Are waistcoats useful for pigeon shooting?

Yes, waistcoats can be useful in mild weather because they add storage without too much bulk around the arms. They must be quiet, dull and comfortable for gun mount.

Are breathable jackets better for pigeon decoying?

Breathable jackets are often better because you may walk in warm, carry kit, build the hide and then sit still. They help reduce sweat while still giving weather protection.

Are fleece jackets good for pigeon shooting?

Yes, fleece jackets are good as a quiet mid layer. They are warm and comfortable, but they need a waterproof outer layer if rain is likely.
